Get Fit and Lose Weight on a Budget

Many people take advantage of the new year to make resolutions to try to improve themselves. One of the most popular resolutions people make is to get fit and lose weight. I know that is something I am working on this year.

Any company that is related to fitness or dieting knows that people make resolutions at the beginning of the year, and take advantage of it. It seems like no matter where you look, you see ads for deals on gym memberships, diet programs, or fitness equipment. Don’t get sucked into spending lots of money on your new resolution.

If you are already fit, and are trying to bulk up, or train to beat your best marathon time that is one thing. This is a great time of year for you to try out a new gym, or buy a new treadmill because you have worn out your old one. However, so many people get sucked into signing up for a years gym membership and never end up using it. They go for a few weeks, then realize that it’s not the thing for them and they are stuck paying for the rest of the year. Or they buy a treadmill or exercise cycle and it ends up with clothes hanging on it.

But, if you are just trying to lose some weight after being a couch potato (like me), or are working up to walking a mile, then there are other ways to do it without spending too much money.

It is always a great time to get fit. You don’t have to wait for the beginning of the year.

Before you pay for a gym membership, or some fancy diet program try some of these free or low cost alternatives. There are plenty of ways to get fit and lose weight without spending a lot of money.

Frugal alternatives to the gym include:

  • Walking
  • Body weight exercises
  • Videos, DVD’s

Walking to Get Fit

Walking is a great way to lose weight and get fit, and it doesn’t need any expensive equipment. All you need is a pair of shoes. Pick a short route around your neighborhood, or go to a local park. Instead of meeting a friend for lunch, invite them to take a walk with you. You can have great conversation and get fit at the same time.

Body Weight Exercises

There are plenty of body weight exercises that you can do. These are exercises that don’t need any equipment or extra weights. So they are free, there is no cost. You can find different exercises on Pinterest or YouTube.

Another inexpensive option is to get some exercise DVD’s and do those at home. Depending on your current level of fitness, there are many options. If you are just starting out, and overweight the Biggest Loser series is a great place to start.

Search YouTube for HIIT or cardio workout and you will find plenty of videos to follow and keep you sweating.

Get Sleep

Get enough sleep

Lastly, make sure that you get enough sleep. This is as important as anything else in staying fit. When you sleep, your body repairs itself.
